Martin Brodeur has Been Named Executive VP of Hockey Ops by the New Jersey Devils

One of the best goalies the NHL has ever seen, Martin Brodeur is back with the team he became a legend at. On Thursday, Brodeur was hired by the New Jersey Devils as the team’s executive VP of hockey ops according to an announcement from the team.

Brodeur signed a multi-year deal to stay with the Devils. He was formerly an advisor to hockey ops and worked mostly on the business side. By moving to executive VP of hockey ops, Brodeur will be focusing strictly on the hockey side of things.

The former goaltender will be tasked with player development, roster management, player recruitment, and overseeing the team’s goaltending development department.

“Working with Tom’s group for the past few years, I have seen firsthand what he and our Managing Partners, David Blitzer and Josh Harris are building,” said Brodeur. “I’ve been fortunate to help them in that time, as we move in the right direction toward consistent, sustained success. This decision allows me to commit all my time to the hockey side and focus on achieving the ultimate goal for our players, tremendous fans and entire organization.”

When rejoining the Devils in 2018 Brodeur was hired as an executive VP of business development. It was not until 2020 when general manager Ray Shero was fired that he moved the hockey ops side of things. He was brought in by general manager Tom Fitzgerald and has aided Fitzgerald on the hockey ops side.

“Marty has been a tremendous resource to me with his experience, input, foresight, and relationships throughout the hockey world,” Fitzgerald said in a statement. “It makes sense to formalize and give clarity to his roles and responsibilities within the organization. I am excited that he has committed to staying with us, as we all work to continue to return New Jersey to the levels of success that Marty reached here as a player.”

Over his 21-season NHL career, Brodeur spent 20 years playing for the Devils. In his time with New Jersey, he won three Stanley Cups, four Vezina Trophies, and the Calder Memorial Trophy. Brodeur was a stone wall in the net and is widely regarded as one of the best goalies to ever play the game. The most impressive stat for Brodeur is that he leads all goalies in goals scored with three.
