Leadership can solve a lot of things. The problem is that 99% of humans don’t understand it. Mark Titus has entered the chat because the only thing he did was reveal that he has a loser mentality. His rant on Dan Hurley is about as embarrassing as it gets.
“UConn fans will tell you that that’s what makes them good, I guess,” Titus explained on The Mark Titus Show. “The ‘fake it until you make it’ type attitude, where if he’s carrying himself like he’s still the champ, then does that bleed into the locker room and the players’ confidence, and they’re like, ‘Yeah, we are the best team in the country.’ You want your guys believing they’re the best in the country.”
“I do know that UConn fans love him,” the former Ohio State basketball walk-on, who joined Barstool in 2023, said. “I would push back on the idea that, like, every time you have a coach who’s an asshole or rough around the edges or is a Dan Hurley-type, it doesn’t have to be exactly in that personality, but just a controversial guy who’s coaching your team. Every fanbase says, ‘If he was your coach, you would love him,’ and I think that’s a cop-out — that’s not true.
“I’m being honest; of course, I’d want the winning. UConn fans are going to hear me say that and they’re going to be like, ‘Oh, I bet you enjoy not making the tournament then. ‘You’re telling me you’d rather not make the tournament than win back-to-back national titles?’ No, I’m telling you I’d rather win back-to-back national titles with, like, not an asshole. I’d rather do it with a guy who doesn’t f*cking suck. But, at the same time, UConn fans love him, and he does embody that whole idea of — that area of the country loves guys like that.”
Let me explain something to you, Mark. The passing out cupcakes method has never worked and it will never work.
We just saw this with the Patriots. Bill Belichick was too hard on the players. That’s what they all said. Jerod Mayo comes in and during his opening presser he talks about how it’s going to be more of a collaboration and how he’s going to be nicer to the players. Mayo wanted nothing to do with the Patriot way. He was fired after one dreadful season and the Patriots quickly realized the old school way is what wins and they hired Mike Vrabel.
Here is a challenge for you, Mark. Name someone who is truly great at what they do who is also easy to get along with?
Do you think Coach K was easy to get along with?
Do you think Bob Huggins is easy to get along with?
Do you think Bob Knight is easy to get along with?
The line of “I’d rather do it with a guy who doesn’t f*cking suck” doesn’t exist. It’s fairytale land nonsense.
Go ask Bengals fans. Zac Taylor is wonderful to get along with. While his team is Charmin soft and Joe Burrow is sitting at home not even in the playoffs.
Go ask Chargers fans. Brandon Staley was wonderful to get along with. The team was ass until they brought in Jim Harbaugh.
By the way, the boss you work for, Dave Portnoy. Love him or hate him, he’s truly great at being a troll. His business model of creating a comedy site and then saying things that anger people because they don’t realize it’s a comedy site, is why you have a job. Do you think Portnoy is easy to get along with?
Name any sport. Bill Parcells, Red Auerbach, Tom Brady… do you think they’re easy to get along with?
The culture is what wins. It’s not the talent. Culture is built through leadership and more often than not “the guy who doesn’t suck” is the one who brings that necessary element to the table.
Leadership. It’s the key to life. Here’s a little advice for Mark and any idiot who agrees with him on how they can fix their stupid ideology.
Every single leader must be able to perform these 4 things every single day to maintain their culture.
1: Command of the room
The leader must have a plan. Communicate that plan to the group. Create a sense of belonging. Create a standard of excellence to adhere to.
2: Command of the message
The plan is no good if you can’t talk about or execute it. The leader must execute the plan authentically. It must take shape based on the leader’s personality. People can begin to visualize it and create confidence without evidence.
3: Command of the process
People often want to take the path of least resistance. Your job is to make them take the path of most resistance. The pain is what keeps you alive. Embrace hard work. Leaders who create culture don’t need the light to see it in the darkness. It’s hard to make tough decisions. Embrace being unpopular. Amateurs gain validation through the scoreboard. Professionals gain validation through the process. The job of the leader is to make the group understand that getting better every day is most important. Embrace the journey.
4: Command of self
Drive creativity and curiosity. How do we deal with mistakes? Smart people learn from their mistakes. The smartest people learn from other people’s mistakes. Admitting when you’re wrong is what gives you credibility. Culture creates leaders among leaders who can fix those errors from within. Culture is about shared attitudes and objectives driven by organizations. Keyword on shared. The team starts to take on the personality of the leader.
The lesson to be learned here is that win, lose, or draw… people will find a way to complain. When Dan Hurley said “better get us now” do you think he didn’t have command of the room or command of the message? Keep being you, Dan Hurley. If Mark Titus understood anything about leadership, he would understand how big of a loser he sounds like.
