Free agents are flying off the board and an interesting name has become available. Everybody is looking for starting pitching and Seattle has boatloads of it. Luis Castillo has been available for the right price and has been placed on the trade block.
The Mariners have “expressed willingness” to listen to offers on the 6-foot-2 right-hander.
Alex Speier of the Boston Globe was the first to report the news. Although, I’ll kindly warn you that the link is behind a paywall. Don’t click it. I’ll tell you everything you need to know. We here at Vendetta Sports Media do not support publications that hide behind paywalls and believe restricting the access to information is wrong on every fundamental level.
Castillo, 32, is set to earn $24.15 million through the 2027 MLB Season. There is an option for 2028 as well in his contract. For a guy who has a career 3.56 ERA in eight MLB Seasons, you can do far worse at that price tag. It’s a matter of what the Mariners are looking for in return.
At the same token, this report really shouldn’t be viewed as surprising. This is what Jerry Dipoto does. He’ll trade anybody. He gets off on it. The guy just trades to trade and never accomplishes anything. It wasn’t long ago that Seattle acquired him from Cincinnati and shortly extended him. Now he’s available again? It’s what Dipoto does. Constantly reshuffles deck chairs without ever building a true winner.
