Marcus Smart had a gruesome right ankle sprain against the Phoenix Suns on Monday in the 4th quarter. While the Celtics went on to win the game, they have a bit of a sacrifice for the win. The video of the injury is below.
As you can see, the injury came from him running with no contact with anyone else. Now, as the tests will be run through today to determine how long he will be out with the injury. With how good the Celtics are playing right now, they should focus on making Marcus Smart 100% healthy before even bringing him back. There is no reason to rush him back and have possibly deal with a chronic ankle injury for the rest of the year. However, his impact will be missed on the court.
Marcus Smart is having a career year for the Celtics. He has career-high averages in PPG at 11.8 and APG at 4.9 APG. Although his FG% isn’t that good at 38%, it’s his second-best shooting year so far. Despite his lack of offense, using advanced statistics, he has a net rating of 8.8. So, to make up for his lack of offense, he is a great defender.
Marcus Smart’s production on defense will be missed, however, the Celtics should be able to manage without him. Javonte Green is technically the next man up at Smart’s position, but I wouldn’t be surprised if rookie Grant Williams sees in an increase in minutes due to Marcus Smart being out. However, this Celtics team is good, we expected this at their ceiling, which is where they’re performing at right now. Marcus Smart is a big part of that. His impact on the defensive end and the offense he fills in when needed are crucial to the Celtics’ success. This Celtics team is scary, and it’s only the beginning.
