The Maple Leafs gave Sheldon Keefe an extension in 2023. In 2024 Toronto will proceed to fire Keefe. I guess that’s the way it was always going to go after the Leafs first round exit via Boston. Keefe will depart Toronto after five seasons as the head coach there.
The Leafs put out this statement regarding the news:
“Today’s decision was difficult,” general manager Brad Treliving said in a statement. “Sheldon is an excellent coach and a great man; however, we determined a new voice is needed to help the team push through to reach our ultimate goal. We thank Sheldon for his hard work and dedication to the organization over the last nine years, and wish him and his family all the very best.”
Keefe, 43, was also heard from today. Maybe this is the view talking but he didn’t exactly look sad about the fact that the Leafs relieved him of his duties.
During Keefe’s tenure in Toronto, the Leafs compiled a record of 212-97-40. That’s good enough for the fourth best points stretch of any team during that time. An impressive mark anyway you slice it. The lack of playoff success is ultimately what did him in. Keefe guided the Leafs to just one playoff series victory during his time as head coach.
We’re going to see Keefe get another job again. These guys are recycled constantly around the league and the Leafs were Keefe’s first head coaching stint. Somebody will eventually hire him. New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, Seattle Kraken, Winnipeg Jets, and the San Jose Sharks all need a new head coach. It could be as soon as this offseason that Keefe gets another gig.
