Manchester United Sack Manager Erik Ten Hag

Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag was sacked as the manager of Manchester United on Monday, according to the club.

This announcement comes following United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday. Former player Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over for Ten Hag on an interim basis.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club said. “Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

This comes following an abysmal start to the Premier League season for Man U. The Red Devils currently find themselves sitting in 14th place in the league table with just 11 points from nine games, leaving them seven points off the top four.

Sources told ESPN that the United hierarchy decided to ultimately fire Ten Hag after losing faith that he would be able to turn things around and have United challenging for the top four. They were concerned that the club’s poor start to the season had them drifting too far off the top of the table already and decided that now was the time to make a change.

Ten Hag was on the hot seat at the conclusion of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign as well after leading United to an 8th-place finish in the league. Despite calls for him to face the sack then, he led his side to a 2-1 upset of rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup Final, leading to a contract extension through the end of next season.

The club has now begun looking for Ten Hag’s successor. United was rumored to be looking at Thomas Tuchel over the summer. However, he recently agreed to become England’s new head coach and is now off the market.

Names such as Graham Potter, Thomas Frank and Xavi Hernandez have been thrown around, while the opportunity for van Nistelrooy to perform well as the interim manager and earn the full-time gig has been rumored to be a possibility as well.
