Manchester United Has The Chance For A Dream 2021 Summer Window

Manchester United fans should realize that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer made some quality progress as the team’s manager in the 2020-2021 season. Considering that United has made the Premier League Top 4 in consecutive seasons for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, more focus should be put on how much backing Solksjaer needs, rather than if he deserves the job. Fans around Old Trafford are growing optimistic with the confirmation of Ed Woodward’s departure and rumblings that the Glazers are considering selling the club, but Solksjaer needs significant financial help in order to continue building the squad and start seriously competing for major trophies. If money were no issue, these are the three signings that would turn Manchester United into contenders.

Step 1: Sign a Right Winger

While fans across social media have debated United’s worst position of need, the answer comes in wide midfield, as adding another elite attacker to the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will improve United’s squad for a variety of reasons. They will score more goals, create more chances, become better in possession, and make an already lethal counterattacking squad even more dangerous. When it comes to personnel, however, there is little debate amongst United fans. Borussia Dortmund’s 21-year-old star Jadon Sancho is at the top of many wishlists. After United’s highly publicized failure to sign him last summer, it is expected that Sancho will make the move to Old Trafford at a cut-price from Germany, as Dortmund have slashed the 120 million euro valuation they previously held in 2020. If United needed any more motivation to add the incredibly skilled winger, he is also very close with other United players on the England national team, including Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Harry Maguire. Sancho should be a no-brainer for the Red Devils this summer.

Step 2: Sign a Defensive Midfielder

Outside of right-wing, defensive mid is the other main position that fans have called to be reinforced. Nemanja Matic’s start to life in Manchester was excellent, but age and injuries have caused his play to deteriorate. As well, many supporters have expressed their displeasure in the “McFred” midfield pivot of Scott McTominay and Brazillian Frederico Santos, or “Fred”, that Solskjaer has started on many different occasions. There is no shortage of options in defensive midfield, especially in the Premier League. West Ham’s Declan Rice, Leicester City’s Wilfried Ndidi, and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma have all been suggested as options to improve United. Rice in particular makes sense, as he would help with locker room chemistry, and the large fee West Ham would likely command could be reduced if the resurgent Jesse Lingard is sold to the Hammers permanently. Adding another midfielder with quality on the ball should be a priority for the board, as a player like Rice would make United harder to break down while also allowing Paul Pogba to have a more advanced midfield role alongside Fernandes.

Step 3: Add Another Center Back

While he has received much scrutiny for his record price tag, Harry Maguire has gone under the radar as one of the most consistent and dependable central defenders in the Premier League over the past two seasons. It would help the United backline greatly if they added a quality partner alongside Maguire in the heart of the defense. Reports have swirled about United’s interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, as his contract with Los Blancos expires in the summer of 2022. The addition of an elite central defender like Varane at a reduced price is an exciting prospect for fans, as his pace, strength, and ball skills would complement Maguire well. For a cut price of around £40 million, the 28-year-old Frenchman would be a great addition to the Red Devils’ squad.

If the Glazers are still set on keeping the club, then a good way to rebuild repertoire with the fans would be to spend big this summer. A window headlined by Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice, and Raphael Varane will go a long way to not only improving the morale of the fans but also the team itself. Those 3 signings would have Manchester United immediately contending in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
