Malik Monk, Kings Agree To Four-Year Extension
The NBA off-season is in full swing early, as we have already seen trades and extensions handed out. Another extension was just announced, as the Sacramento Kings and NBA Sixth Man of the Year runner-up Malik Monk have agreed to a four-year, $78 million extension (with player option). This deal was announced by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Monk, who will be entering his third season in Sacramento, is officially rewarded for his stellar play off the bench and will be locked in for the next three seasons, at minimum.
Monk, 26, is coming off his best year as a pro, averaging 15.4 points per game, 2.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists. It was a close race for Sixth Man of the Year this year, where Monk would finish second behind Minnesota Timberwolves Forward Naz Reid. Reid would finish with 45 first-place votes and 352 total points, and Monk finished with 43 first-place votes and 342 total points. Monk played a huge part in the success of this Kings team, helping them finish 46-36, earning a Play-In spot in the Western Conference last season.
Malik Monk, who will be entering his eighth season in the NBA, has bounced around multiple teams so far but has now found a home in Sacramento. The Kings seem to be building a young nucleus, centered around De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, and securing guys to help them succeed is crucial. The Western Conference is stacked, but the Kings seem to be building the right way. Monk brings athleticism, pure scoring ability, and defensive reliability to this roster. Could the Kings be a real playoff contender next season? With a young roster and energetic fans, anything is possible.
