I think everyone was a bit surprised to see Malachi Nelson enter the transfer portal. Nelson was supposed to replace Caleb Williams after this year. Then again, maybe we should be a little bit less surprised when we saw that performance by Miller Moss in the Bowl game.
Nelson has announced where he’s going to be playing next. Let’s call it the road less traveled for highly recruited quarterbacks. The former USC product is heading to Boise State. 247 Sports were the first to report the news.
Nelson, 19, clearly lost his place at USC. There really is no other way to put it. If he were the best option at USC in 2024, he would still be there. Nelson was a former five star quarterback but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to play yet. Nelson has good size checking in at 6-foot-3, 190. It’s just about cleaning up the other parts of his game. Take this with a grain of salt but he reminds me a lot of Jordan Love. Another guy who also wasn’t ready to play for a while.
Nelson threw for 2,898 yards, 35 touchdowns and 4 interceptions during his final season of high school in California. He will now step right in as the starter at Boise State with all of his remaining years of eligibility. Taylen Green also transferred to Arkansas so there really is virtually no competition on the roster. This should be Nelson’s job for the next few years while getting to play on the blue turf.
