The Major League Baseball season is well underway. However, a bit of a surprise came out earlier today. Jomboy Media, known for hit podcasts like Talkin Yanks and Talkin Baseball—is officially partnering with MLB. Announced this morning, the deal includes them acquiring a stake in the company and granting Jomboy expanded rights to use league footage and IP. It’s a big move for the media company originally founded by Jimmy O’Brien.
Originally founded in 2017, Jomboy reached 93 million engagements on social media in 2024. Despite the pandemic throwing everyone off balance, they rolled with the punches for the most part. Originally, it was O’Brien breaking down footage from manager ejections, in-game altercations, or other uncanny moments. However, with the success there they were able to branch off into a lot of different venues. Their real breakthrough outside of podcasting and the breakdowns is the “Warehouse Games,” a series built on backyard-style wiffleball game. With 400 million views and counting, they had already made a deal to put it on cable.
Both the MLB and O’Brien released statements on the news earlier today:
“We have long admired the passionate fandom of Jimmy O’Brien and his unique ability to connect with baseball fans,” Noah Garden, MLB deputy commissioner, business and media, said in a statement. “This partnership will ensure that Jomboy Media will have the resources and access to MLB intellectual property necessary to help it continue to grow. We are looking forward to bringing baseball fans more entertaining content to help further expand baseball’s online presence and deeper the connection between our sport and its fans.”
“I continue to be amazed by what our community enables us to do through their endless support. When we started talking about baseball on the internet, it was just a fun hobby. Our community is the reason we’ve been able to turn this from ‘just a hobby,’ into something bigger than we ever could’ve imagined,” O’Brien said in a statement. “Partnering with MLB marks a huge moment for Jomboy Media, and through this partnership, we’ll be able to give back to our community with storytelling that’s deeper than ever before.”
Love them or hate them, Jomboy Media isn’t going anywhere. The partnership with MLB only cements their place in the media industry, especially for baseball. While critics may question the move, it’s clear Jomboy has built something that resonates with people, and now they’ve got the league’s backing to take it even further.
