Luis Gil wins 2024 AL Rookie of the Year

New York Yankees righthander Luis Gil won the American League Rookie of the Year award for the 2024 MLB season, MLB announced Monday.

Gil won the award over Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser and fellow teammate Austin Wells, who caught 13 of his 29 games. This was a far more narrow race than it was in the National League, racking up 15 first-place votes to Cowser’s 13; the only other two players with one first-place vote apiece were Athletics closer Mason Miller and Guardians reliever Cade Smith.

Gil had one less second-place and two fewer third-place votes than Coswer, who finished with five fewer voting points; a total of seven players earned votes for the award. Gil became the 10th Yankee to win the award, including the first since Aaron Judge took the home in 2017.

Paul Skenes wins 2024 NL Rookie of the Year

Across 29 starts, the 26-year-old sported a 3.50 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 151.2 innings. His tantalizing fastball/slider/changeup mix allowed him to miss bats at a 29.0 percent clip this year. His biggest problem was control, surrendering an MLB-most 77 walks with a walk-rate exceeding 12 percent, which is very high.

It was encouraging to see Gil put together a consistent body of work after missing the entirety of 2023 with Tommy John surgery. He got a cup of coffee in both 2021 and 2022, but maintained rookie eligibility heading into 2024. With plenty of question marks in their rotation entering 2025, it’s paramount that the righty continues to improve.
