It’s the most important week of the regular season for many teams with playoff hopes on the line. Yet, I’d argue this week is most important for the Chicago Bears.
The Bears stand a loss against the Vikings and a Texans win away from the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The tank has been generational with Justin Fields proving himself, but the team is still losing almost every game. It’s been the perfect season and now, all the organization needs to cap it off is some help. The team’s fate rests on Lovie Smith, the longtime former Chicago Bear and Illinois coach, to win one game against Sam Ehlinger.
Smith has to know the Houston Texans are moving on from him after this year, so I’d figure he doesn’t care where the Texans’ pick falls in the upcoming draft. On the other hand, he surely still has some love for the Bears franchise that he had considerable success with, right?
Well, I hope so because if he manages to beat the Jeff Saturday-led Indianapolis Colts, Chicago will be partying. The Bears will have all the tools to change the franchise’s course, destiny entirely in its own hands. Chicago will have the pick that half the teams in the NFL want.
The hope is that Ryan Poles has a legacy defining offseason in 2023 for the Chicago Bears. With the first overall pick and talents like Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud available, the trading opportunities are endless. The Bears could be looking at a handful of first round picks, and in general, either a bucketload of other picks to go with that or possibly a star player to help now. The help that Fields desperately needs is right at Poles’ fingertips.
Yet, this dream is still just that as of right now. The Bears need everything they can get from Lovie Smith. The man needs all of Chicago behind his back this weekend as he goes to war for the franchise he gave so much to.
