After a 17-year long career, Lou Williams is finally calling it quits. The former three-time 6th Man of the Year award winner made the announcement Sunday morning via a YouTube video. Feel free to click the link to see the full video. It was a hell of a career but the announcement comes as no surprise given the fact that Williams didn’t play this year.
Williams, 36, had his most productive seasons with the Clippers. Williams and Montrezl Harrell formed a sick duo where he was able to do a ton of damage coming off the bench. There is a reason why Williams won the award in 2015, 2018, and 2019. The other year Williams won the award was with Toronto. He also spent time with the 76ers, Lakers, Hawks, and Rockets.
Williams was actually selected out of high school by the Sixers with the 45th pick in the 2005 draft. The fact that he made it this long as an undersized guard should speak volumes. Commonly referred to as “Sweet Lou,” it’s safe to say that this a career you will take from a former 45th overall pick. The track record on those second round picks panning out is not great…
As Lou Williams embarks on the next chapter of his life, his contributions to the sport will not be forgotten. The basketball world bids farewell to an intriguing talent we won’t forget about. Williams was the ultimate spark plug off the bench and teams are always trying to find a 6th man like Williams. Good luck to Sweet Lou in whatever he does next.
