Dodgers showing interest in Lucas Giolito

It’s no secret that the Chicago White Sox will be sellers at the trade deadline. It’s been a disappointing season and it seems like they are going to have to start this whole thing over. Lucas Giolito as a result is a name that has been thrown around as a player who will likely be traded. The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly one of the main teams interested in bringing in the right-hander, according to MLB.com insider Jon Morosi.

It would certainly be a welcomed upgrade for this Dodgers team. Injuries have plagued their rotation, including 35-year-old Clayton Kershaw. The back end of the rotation has also been a real weakness for this Dodgers team.

Names like Noah Syndergaard have tried and failed to hold down the back end of this rotation. Forcing the Dodgers to rely on rookies like Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan. That, alone, indicates a need for this Dodgers team to bring in some veteran help for this rotation–they greatly relieve that stress by bringing in Giolito.

Giolito, 28, is having a really solid bounce-back season. He’s tossed 112.1 innings to the tune of a 3.45 ERA, 1.139 WHIP with 117 strikeouts. Hitters are also only hitting .223 against him, and he’s been great at eating up innings for Chicago.

Something that this Dodgers team needs more than anything right now is a consistent, healthy arm that can hold it down every five days and eat innings. Giolito can do just that.

The Dodgers greatly improved lineup should also benefit Giolito. He will have a lot more run support and be much more comfortable on the mound as a result. He should see an increase in wins which, in turn, should further bolster his confidence throughout the rest of the season.

Overall, I think this would be a great move for the Dodgers or really any contending team. Lucas Giolito is a safe arm and you know more or less what you are getting with him. Not a dominant ace, but a great number No. 2-3 arm in the rotation who can take the pressure off others.

The rich get richer is the saying, the Dodgers would be doing just that by bringing in Giolito. As a baseball fan, I do hope this doesn’t happen.
