The Los Angeles Clippers have inked head coach Ty Lue to a long-term extension, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report Wednesday. He was entering the final year of his current deal.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Lue’s extension will be worth five years for $70 million. That would put him behind Detroit’s Monty Williams, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich and Miami’s Erik Spoelstra for the most total money rewarded to a coach leaguewide.
One of the Clippers’ top priorities entering this offseason was to re-sign Lue.
Lue, 47, is regarded as one of the NBA’s top tacticians. He coached LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ first-ever NBA Title as an interim coach in 2015-16 and eventually made two more Finals with James the following two seasons.
He was named the Clippers’ head man ahead of the 2020-21 season amid Doc Rivers’ firing. He’s gone 184-134 (.579) with Los Angeles and 13-17 in the postseason despite multiple injuries to his two top stars, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. For his career, he’s 312-217 (.590) and 54-37 (.593) in the playoffs.
Lue’s done a masterful job maximizing talent and generating a number of the NBA’s top defenses during his tenures, despite the lack of personnel on occasion. The Lakers made an ill-fated attempt to recruit Lue earlier in the offseason–four years after nearly hiring him–but it always expected that he would sign this extension with the Clippers.
