Los Angeles Chargers Sign Najee Harris To One-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent running back Najee Harris, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. The deal is worth up to $9.25 million.

Harris is coming off a year where he ran for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns while adding 36 receptions for 283 yards in the passing game. In his four-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards each season; however, he has only logged 3.9 yards per carry in that period.

The Chargers running back room was empty at the start of free agency. J.K. Dobbins is a free agent and the team released Gus Edwards. That left Kimani Vidal as the team’s top back.

The Chargers can still add another back to share the backfield with Harris. It is difficult to imagine they will roll into next season expecting Harris and Vidal to carry the entire workload. It is still feasible for the team to add another back in free agency. That said, the 2025 NFL Draft is loaded with talented running backs. The Chargers could easily find an explosive home-run hitter to add next to Harris.

One important factor regarding Harris is the specific details of his contract. The fact that it’s a one-year deal provides the Chargers with long-term flexibility; however, $9.25 million is a hefty fee for Harris. That fee will be easier to manage if the deal includes incentives that get the deal to its maximum number.

The loss of Harris will make the Steelers a team that will hit the running back market hard. As previously mentioned, the stacked 2025 NFL Draft makes it easier to fill the void at the position.
