Angels hiring Ron Washington as new manager

The Los Angeles Angels are hiring former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington as their new manager, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman was first to report Wednesday. Washington was most recently the third-base coach of the Atlanta Braves, a position he held for seven seasons.

Washington marks the team’s fifth manager since the start of the 2018 season, having gone through Mike Scioscia, Brad Ausmus, Joe Maddon and, most recently, Phil Nevin for a season-and-a-half. Washington was the Tezs Rangers’ manager from 2007-2014, where he went 664-611 with three postseason appearances and back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010-11.

Washington, 71, will be on a two-year deal with the organization, according to MLB reporter Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He has received managerial consideration throughout his coaching career, including with the Atlanta Braves after the 2016 season before naming Brian Snitker the manager.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Angels were considering former Mets manager Buck Showalter for the position, as well as Gary DiSarcina, Benji Gil and Ray Montgomery for the position.

The Angels have not had a winning season since 2015, when they finished 85-77. The organization last made the postseason in 2014 after finishing 98-64, and has not won a postseason game since 2009. Since 2015, the Halos have won 74, 80, 80, 72, 26 (out of 60), 77, 73 and 73 games, respectively, having been in a state of perpetual mediocrity despite having Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani (since 2018), two of the best players in MLB, on their roster.

Ohtani will be a free agent this offseason, as will Gio Urshela, C.J. Cron, Jared Walsh and Mike Moustakas, among others. We will have more clarity once the offseason is included, but Washington could have his hands full trying to will the Angels back to the postseason for the first time in a decade.
