After a brief stint in Europe with Zalgiris (Lithuania), guard Lonnie Walker IV is back in the NBA! The 26-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania was among the first to report.
Walker had an opt-out clause with Zalgiris that allowed him to opt out up until Feb. 18. It was originally reported Tuesday from NBA insider Marc Stein that he was planning on finishing out the current season in Lithuania and would pursue another NBA opportunity next season.
But the developments changed incredibly fast, with the 76ers calling at the “11th hour,” as Stein described.
The 76ers do currently have a full roster, but David Roddy‘s 10-day contract expires this week. Chuma Okeke also signed a 10-day contract after the trade deadline, but there hasn’t been any word about him re-upping for a second 10-day with the organization at the time of this publication.
In 33 games with Zalgiris, Walker was averaging 13.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists on 42.9 percent shooting and 40.0 percent from 3-point range in 20.6 minutes per game. The veteran guard has played in 322 games with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. He signed with the reigning champion Boston Celtics ahead of the season, but did not stick with them past training camp.
There was a point in time where he was the best free agent available in the offseason, believe it or not. For his career, he averaged 9.8 points and 2.3 rebounds on 42.2/35.6/79.5 shooting splits, providing a legitimate offensive burst off the bench. It’s cool to see him get another opportunity, which is well-deserved.
The deal has not been made official by the 76ers yet.
