Liverpool defensive midfielder Fabinho is set to be the next player to make the leap to Saudi Arabia. According to Fabrizio Romano, he is set to sign with Al-Ittihad.
Fabinho will be the second Liverpool player to move to Saudi Arabia this week. Fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson signed with Al-Ettifaq on Thursday.
Al-Ittihad is believed to be paying a £40 million ($52 million) transfer fee to secure the Brazilian’s signature. A verbal agreement has been reached between the two clubs. All that is left now is for Liverpool and Al-Ittihad to sign the necessary paperwork.
Al-Ittihad has been targeting Fabinho for a while now. Liverpool left him out of the squad for its pre-season trip to Singapore to allow him to finalize his move to Saudi Arabia. The move looked to be in jeopardy earlier this week due to a disagreement over the payment structure. However, all issues appear to be ironed out, and Fabinho is now set to join Karim Benzema, Jota and N’Golo Kanté at Al-Ittihad.
Liverpool will now look to replace the 29-year-old Fabinho before next season. The club is looking to sign Southampton’s Roméo Lavia to fill the void left by the Brazilian’s departure. Although Liverpool’s initial attempt to sign Lavia was rejected by Southampton, the club is still confident they can sign the 19-year-old Belgian this summer.
The list of elite players moving to the Saudi Pro League continues to grow with each passing week. I will admit, when Ronaldo claimed that the Saudi Pro League was on the rise, I was skeptical. However, with the number of high-profile signings the league has pulled off this summer, no one should be taking the Saudi Pro League for granted.
It will be interesting to see how players like Fabinho can help elevate the Saudi League’s profile and quality next season.
