Liverpool completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz in a club record transfer move on Thursday, the club announced in a statement. The Reds paid a whopping £116 million ($156.11m) to bring the German to England, and he has signed a five-year contract with the club.
Not only is this Liverpool’s record transfer fee for a player, but Wirtz’s move to Liverpool could soon become the British transfer record as well. Liverpool paid £100 million ($134.58m) upfront with a further £16 million ($21.53m) in add-ons. If these add-ons are activated, the 22-year-old’s transfer would break the British transfer record.
Bayern Munich were also looking at the potential of signing Wirtz as well and keeping the German international in the Bundesliga. However, Liverpool was always his destination of choice, especially given his chance to reunite with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who also made the move to the defending Premier League champions earlier this summer.
“I feel very happy and very proud,” Wirtz said. “Finally, it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy. I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.”
This is a huge signing for Arne Slot and Liverpool. Wirtz is one of the most exciting and promising attacking talents in the world, and he demonstrated this while at Bayer Leverkusen.
During the club’s incredible Bundesliga title-winning season in 2023-24, Wirtz was named the Bundesliga player of the season. He contributed 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 total matches throughout the season, and also helped Leverkusen reach the Europa League final.
While last season was not quite as prolific, he still scored 16 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions, which are still impressive numbers.
Needless to say, Liverpool is doing the exact kind of transfer business they need to if they want to retain their Premier League title. Wirtz can score, has remarkable technical ability and can put his teammates into perfect positions with his playmaking.
Liverpool looks like they have only upgraded since winning the league last season, and Wirtz is expecting more success in his first season at the club:
“I would like to win everything every year!” Wirtz said. “First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”
It will be fascinating to see how he adjusts to the Premier League next season, but expect him to flourish.
