Lindy Ruff, Devils agree to multi-year contract extension

After one of the biggest turnarounds in NHL history, the New Jersey Devils have extended head coach Lindy Ruff to a multi-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.

The Devils became one of the most enticing teams in the NHL last season. Becoming one of the fastest and highest-scoring offenses in the league, thanks to breakout seasons from multiple players and Ruff’s experience. New Jersey finished third in league standings, making the playoffs and advancing for the first time since 2012.

“This young, exciting team has developed and thrived under Lindy’s stewardship since he joined the Devils organization,” David Blitzer, the Devils’ Managing Partner, said via release. “Lindy is one of the winningest coaches in NHL history and his extension is well deserved. I’m looking forward to continued team success this upcoming season and beyond.”

“We’re incredibly fortunate as an organization to have Lindy Ruff behind the bench to guide this group, who’ve made significant strides under his leadership,” Tom Fitzgerald, the team’s Executive Vice President/General Manager, said. “I’ve always believed that Lindy was, and continues to be, the right man behind the bench for this team. From the beginning, he’s done a tremendous job piloting our young group, and we’re excited to see this team’s continued success under his watch as we take the next steps.”

“I’m thrilled to commit here to this situation and couldn’t be prouder of the great progress that our group made last season,” Ruff said. “We have a special group in Jersey and there’s an opportunity to accomplish long-term success, make a lot of positive memories and give our fans a lot to cheer about – because our Devils’ fan base is one of the best in the League and they deserve to see a winner.”

Ruff and the Devils opened up their regular season with a 7-0-0 record a year ago, scoring 30 goals in those seven games. New Jersey starts off their 2023-24 season on Thursday, Oct. 12th, 2023, at 7:30 pm. EST.
