Fun fact! Alexander Holtz has the same number of even-strength goals that Elias Pettersson has (11). One guy is averaging 12:03 minutes of ice time per night while skating on the fourth line. The other is at 19:44 and is the number one center for his team.
I’m not going to sit here and pretend that Holtz is the better player. That would be silly. I’m simply here to point you in a direction. A direction that needs to be talked about.
WTF is Lindy Ruff doing with Alexander Holtz? It’s lowkey gross and it needs to be talked about more.
This Sportskeeda article (a publication that clearly respects Trey) summarizes the crux of the issue with Ruff. To quickly summarize, Holtz scored the game-tying goal. Ruff benched him for the rest of the game for an up-the-ice pass he made before scoring.
Insane. Makes no sense. Clearly has an ax to grind with him.
What’s worse is the Devils have been snake-bitten by the injury bug all year. It makes no sense to not give Holtz a bigger opportunity. How is there a guy with 11 even-strength goals buried on the 4th line? What are we actually talking about?
I’m just asking for answers. I get that maybe Ruff is frustrated that he’s not playing the game the way he wants it played. At some point, there has to be a resolution. Holtz has to be someone who helps the Devils win. Not sheltered in the bottom of the lineup because the coach has an ax to grind.
The Devils wouldn’t make the playoffs if the season ended today. Is something going to give here?
Quick side note: I just want to apologize to Andrew Brunette. He wasn’t ready for that playoff series against Tampa while coaching the Panthers but it’s fairly obvious New Jersey misses him. He’s also gotten Nashville to play pretty well and that team stinks. Food for thought.
