Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy will leave the club at the end of the season, according to the club’s website. Vardy also confirmed that he would leave the already-relegated Foxes at the end of the season on his socials.
This news is stunning for many in the footballing world. After paying just £1M to sign the former England international from Fleetwood Town in 2012, Vardy went on to play 13 seasons for the Foxes. He has tallied 198 goals in 495 appearances for the club and was a key part of Leicester’s miraculous 2015-16 Premier League title.
He also helped the club win an FA Cup, a Community Shield and two Championship titles, along with playing in the Champions League for the Foxes.
“I’ve been here so long that I truly never thought it would end, so this has not only been really difficult for me to write but also a really difficult decision to make,” Vardy said. “Leicester City has been my second home and my extended family and my life for 13 years.
“The club, the city, the people mean so much to me and my family. It’s a place that has shaped the lives of our kids, who have been so lucky to call Leicester home for so long. But for me, the time has come to say goodbye.”
The 38-year-old has had a frustrating final season with Leicester, scoring just seven goals in a year where the Foxes have looked completely outgunned compared to the rest of the Premier League. They currently sit in 19th place and have the second-worst attack in the entire league, with only 20th-place Southampton being worse.
Vardy’s final game in a Leicester shirt will be on May 25 against Bournemouth. If he plays every game remaining in the season, he will finish his Leicester career with exactly 500 appearances for the club.
It is important to note that while his time with Leicester has come to an end, Vardy has confirmed that he is not retiring and plans on continuing his professional career. No matter where he ends up, it will feel weird not to see Leicester’s crest on his shirt, but we wish nothing but the best to Vardy as he embarks on this new chapter.
