Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has been suspended one match and fined £10,000 (roughly $11,500) following an altercation with the referees during a match with Brentford on Sept. 3, according to an official statement from the club.
With Leeds down 3-1 in the second half, Marsch lost his cool following a penalty appeal and was shown a red card in the 64th minute. Leeds ultimately lost the match 5-2.
Earlier in the match, Brentford was awarded a penalty after VAR took a look at it. Marsch was sent into a fit after VAR did not look at what was a sure penalty in the second half.
In his post-match interview, Marsch called out the officials for not going to VAR to check the penalty after it was used to give Brentford a penalty.
“What is more baffling is that they didn’t look at the penalty incident,” Marsch said. “That to me is baffling.”
The next match for Leeds is a meeting at Elland Road against Aston Villa on Oct. 2 — which Marsch will miss unless he and the club successfully appeal. That match comes after having two consecutive matches postponed this week following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Among the matches is a rivalry contest against Manchester United — one of three Premier League matches postponed this upcoming weekend due to a lack of police availability.
In his first full season for the Yorkshire club, Marsch has started out quite well going undefeated in the first three league matches, including a shocking 3-0 win against Chelsea, but has since lost two of the last three.
Marsh saved Leeds from almost certain relegation last season and has them currently sitting in ninth place on the table after six matches, one point behind Brentford and Liverpool.
