During this year’s NBA All-Star break, the King, LeBron James, had some interesting comments on Las Vegas’ hockey team and got confused by who it actually was. James would go onto speak about his desire to own an NBA team in Las Vegas, according to Arash Markazi.
When being interviewed, James had to be corrected after calling the Los Angeles Kings Vegas’ NHL team. “The Kings are in L.A., right?” James said, before being corrected by a reporter in the background.
“I would love to at some point dawn a role and own an NBA franchise and be able to bring a winning franchise to a city,” James later said in the interview.
James has a history of ownership around sports leagues. He currently holds a minority ownership in Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool FC, the Boston Red Sox, Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, and is a part-owner of AC Milan. James is no unfamiliar face to ownership in sports, and he would likely be a great suitor for an NBA team.
The NBA has been questioning expanding their league for quite some time now. The Charlotte Bobcats, now Charlotte Hornets, were the last team to enter the league in 2004.
Multiple cities are possibilities for the expansion of the NBA. Seattle has been a city that has caused some noise. The Seattle Supersonics played in the league from 1967 until their rebranding to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008.
As James wanted, Las Vegas has been a name in the clouds for some time now. Vegas now has the Aces in the WNBA. So, having a team in NBA in Vegas, a city with a huge market and a growing city, would be perfect to complement the league.
