Several NBA players had a hard deadline on Sunday to exercise their player options for the 2025-26 season.
One of those players, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, exercised his option worth $52.6 million. However, his agent, Rich Paul, had an interesting quote possibly regarding James’ future in Los Angeles.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.
“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”
Maybe it’s nothing. James putting pressure on Rob Pelinka and the Lakers’ brass isn’t surprising–he did this several times in Cleveland. On multiple occasions, James would sign a short-term contract, threaten departure and then ultimately stay when he got what he wanted.
That could be the same case here, too, though James is entering his age-41 season and doesn’t quite have the wielding power that he did for his hometown team.
The Lakers finished last season as the No. 3 seed in the West at 50-32. But they got bounced in five games to Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lakers also added Luka Doncic ahead of the deadline. James isn’t an idiot; he knows the Lakers should and will prioritize building around Doncic over him.
That doesn’t mean they won’t remain competitive, but the Lakers are still facing an uphill climb in a stacked Western Conference. They don’t have a center nor do they have a ton of reliable guard or wing depth. There appears to be some level of mutual interest in retaining Dorian Finney-Smith, but it all remains fluid ahead of Monday’s free agency.
Forking over valuable assets for a soon-to-be 41-year-old who’s possibly in his last season would be awful process for any contender. James also owns a no-trade clause, so he controls his own destiny. Could he be headed to Cleveland for one last time, or will another suitor emerge, if he’s indeed on the trade block?
Do you think James will conclude his career in Los Angeles? Let us know in the comments!
