Lane Kiffin is reportedly jumping schools. According to Jon Sokoloff of WCBI News, Kiffin will step down from his head coach role at Ole Miss to become the head coach for Auburn.
The saga between Auburn and Kiffin has not been a well-kept secret. After Auburn fired Bryan Harsin a couple of weeks ago, Athletic Director John Cohen made it clear that he wanted Kiffin badly. It looks like he got him.
With this move, Kiffin will have to step down from his role as head coach at fellow SEC West school Ole Miss. This move is somewhat surprising as 2022 was Kiffin’s third season at Ole Miss. In that time Kiffin went 23-11. That record is slightly deceiving though. In 2020, his first year in the program, the Rebels went 5-5. Afterward, they went 10-3 in 2021. As far as 2022 goes, they started off 8-1 but lost their last two games to Alabama and Arkansas which put them at 8-3 on the year.
Kiffin will have his work cut out for him at Auburn. The Tigers have been bad in 2022. They are currently sitting at 5-6 with just two SEC wins. Things do not get easier as they will face Alabama next week as they look to become eligible. With that being said, Auburn is an established brand, with great facilities, and endless resources. Needless to say, there are far worse situations in college football.
Thankfully for Auburn fans, Kiffin is more than capable of turning a program around. At a minimum, he will get talent in the building. Kiffin is a solid recruiter and has found success in the transfer portal. Both of those tasks should be easier at Auburn too.
With this move, Kiffin will have to update his already lengthy resume. Kiffin has now been the head coach at Auburn, Ole Miss, USC, Tennessee, and Florida Atlantic. That does not even count his time as an offensive coordinator.
