LaMelo Ball is having a terrific freshman year, already proving most of his doubters wrong. This season he is averaging 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. While shooting 43% from the field, and 35% from three.
If you’re an NBA fan from before Ball was drafted, you know Carmelo Anthony as “Melo.” But young NBA fans are calling LaMelo Ball “Melo.” Stop it. Melo has been Anthony’s nickname since he entered the league with the Denver Nuggets in 2003. Carmelo is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. He is also currently 12th in NBA scoring. At the age of 36, Carmelo has been in the league for 18 seasons making the All-Star game for 10 of those years. He also was scoring champion in the 2012-2013 season. As well as a 6-time ALL NBA player.
LaMelo Ball has also recently stolen Carmelo’s three-pointer celebration. Carmelo has been famous for his three to the dome forever. LaMelo recently used it after hitting a three against the Warriors. But, he needs to come up with his own celebration because that one is taken by a guy that still has a lot left in the tank.
While Anthony never did win Rookie of the Year, and LaMelo is on pace to win the award. Carmelo is a Top-15 player in NBA History. When Carmelo does retire in a few years, maybe the NBA will transition to calling Ball the nickname. But for now, out of respect, he needs to stop copying the real Melo.
Will LaMelo be a Superstar?
Absolutely, but if he wants to be remembered for his own legacy he needs his own celebration that can be linked to him.
