May Jerry West rest in peace. Even in the year that he died, the Celtics found a way to win the title and the Lakers didn’t even bother to make it past the first round. At least Bill Walton is happy.
Anyway, as the Celtics raise Banner 18, there is a real lesson to be learned here for the Lakers. Will the Lakers actually do what the Celtics were smart enough to do many years ago?
The Lakers oddly find themselves in the place that the Celtics were in when they traded Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Nets. It changed everything for Boston. Do the Lakers have the balls to do the same with LeBron James and Anthony Davis?
Let’s be real; this team in LA isn’t going anywhere. The Lakers were a 7 seed this year with a record of 47-35. They were never within an eyelash of winning a postseason series. LeBron is turning 40 in December. The days of this core with LeBron and Anthony Davis winning a title are long over.
Are the Lakers willing to do what the Celtics had the balls to do years ago? Move off of aging stars and build a real foundation? It’s what’s required to build the next great Lakers team. I’m just not sure they’re cutthroat enough to actually do it. It is time to say no to LeBron so that this team can get back to actually competing with the Celtics.
