Lake Erie Walleye Cheaters Go Viral for Massive Scandal

I truly don’t know very much about fishing. I’ve maybe done it three times in my life. However, I do know a major cheating scandal when I see it. The fishing world produced one this past weekend at the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament in Cleveland. The event’s winning team cheated, and the whole thing is on video. Tournament director Jason Fischer noticed some discrepancies when the fish were sized up and decided to cut the fish open just offstage. Inside he found lead balls wrapped in fish filets that had been fed to the fish to augment their weight. The five fish expected to weigh around 20 pounds in total clocked in at 34 pounds.

Upon slicing open the walleye, Fischer yelled, “We got weights in fish!” Immediately, an angry mob surrounded the cheaters, peppering them with insults and expletives. Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky were immediately disqualified from the event and stripped of a $29,000 prize. The pair previously won a string of events leading up to the Lake Erie Walleye event, which raised some eyebrows. They accumulated tens of thousands of dollars in prizes before being caught.

Videos of the event have gone viral on TikTok and YouTube. Here is a full video of the incident. The main action occurs five minutes into the clip.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors are currently looking into the incident alongside the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. They have yet to bring forward any criminal charges. Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky likely face serious legal penalties and may be disqualified from future fishing competitions for life.
