Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has torn his ACL and will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania revealed Tuesday.
Irving left the first quarter in Monday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings with the injury after trying to split two defenders–DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas–driving to the rim. He got fouled and was able to shoot both free throws before being helped off by trainers.
As the crowd chanted “MVP,” he was able to sink both free throws–an inspiring moment amid the very unfortunate injury.
There is no telling whether Irving will be healthy enough to play the 2025-26 season. The details are still unclear, but one could speculate that he may miss most of the upcoming season.
Irving, who turns 33-years-old in March, was due for a lucrative multi-year extension this upcoming offseason with a $44 million player option on the books. He could’ve declined that option and be eligible to sign a five-year extension north of $300 million or sign a three- or four-year deal to line up with the remainder of Anthony Davis‘ current contract.
Through 50 games, he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game on 47.3 percent shooting and 40.1 percent from 3-point range. He was very clearly the team’s No. 1 option after the Mavericks inexplicably traded Luka Doncic in early February, averaging 28.1 points on 45.2/35.4/94.9 shooting splits in the 10 prior contests leading into last night.
The Mavericks don’t have a good primary initiator behind Irving; Spencer Dinwiddie, Dante Exum and Max Christie could take some of the load off, but none of them should be relied upon as options to run an offense.
Kyrie Irving’s injury adds to the litany of injuries that’s plagued the Mavericks in recent weeks. Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively and PJ Washington are all injured; Hardy got injured Monday as well and Caleb Martin–acquired at the deadline from the 76ers–has yet to make his team debut due to a hip injury.
It’s really the season from hell in Dallas, huh?
