Kyrie Irving Calls Latest Nike Signature Shoe “Trash”

NBA star Kyrie Irving was vocal on Instagram today concerning leaked images of the latest edition of his Nike signature model: the Kyrie 8. Instagram account @k11kicks, a page devoted solely to Irving’s sneakers, posted pictures of what is rumored to be Nike and Irving’s eighth shoe together. In a response to the photo, Irving said this:

“I have nothing to do with the design or marketing of the upcoming #Kyrie8, IMO these are trash! I have Absolutely nothing to do with them! Nike plans to release it without my okay regardless of what I say, so I apologize in advance to all of my sneaker heads and true supporters of the #KAI11 brand”

Irving signed with Nike in the summer of 2011 just a month before he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first overall pick. His first signature shoe with the brand was released three years later and has since been a staple for hoopers and sneakerheads alike.

Seven years and seven silhouettes later, Irving’s shoes have seen collaborations with cereals like Wheaties and Lucky Charms, sneaker store Concepts, and even SpongeBob. But it appears that the relationship between the athletic retail juggernaut and the 29-year-old NBA star may be strained.

The promotion of the shoe likely would have come if Irving played in the Olympics, but because of an injury, the Nets guard did not suit up for Team USA in Tokyo. No news has been publicized regarding the potential release of the silhouette, but fans of Nike and Irving may have to wait with bated breath after the latter called this latest rendition “trash.” If Irving’s claim that he had no input in the product’s creation or development is true, we could see a massive shake-up in the sneaker world. Whether that separation becomes a reality remains to be seen, but there could be a massive shoe free agent next summer.
