Virginia Basketball is adding a March legend to its coaching staff. Kyle Guy, the 2019 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, is returning to Charlottesville after leading the Cavaliers to a national championship five years ago. He is joining Tony Bennett’s staff as Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant.
In a release announcing the hire, Tony Bennett said:
“We are thrilled to welcome Kyle and his family back to Charlottesville. Kyle is not only one of the best players I’ve ever coached, but also one of the finest young men I’ve met. He will make an immediate impact on our program, working with our players and sharing the expertise and competitive fire he’s gained throughout his collegiate and professional career.”
Kyle Guy’s piece of the announcement read:
“C’ville I am back! I want to sincerely thank Coach Bennett and Carla Williams for trusting me with the opportunity to come back and begin this next chapter of my life. This was not an easy decision for me, but knowing how much love I have for this culture and community made it very clear where I should be with my family. I’m beyond excited to help this team and the University in any way needed. I’m also excited for my kids to see the work never stops! Fail harder!”
Over his three years at Virginia, Guy was a two-time All-American, two-time All-ACC First Teamer, and 2018 ACC Tournament MVP. In his senior season, he averaged 15.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 44.9% from the field and 42.6% from three. Guy ranks third all-time in ACC history for three-point percentage with a career mark of 42.5%.
Guy was drafted by the New York Knicks with the 55th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the Sacramento Kings and one with the Miami Heat before heading overseas. Over the last two years, Guy split time between Spain and Greece, scoring 14.3 points per game for Liga ACB’s Tenerife in his final professional campaign.
