The Red Sox have a wave of talented prospects coming. It turns out we’re going to see at least one of them on the 2025 MLB Opening Day roster. Kristian Campbell, welcome to the show! The former Georgia Tech product has been informed he will make the team coming out of Spring.
KPRC 2’s Ari Alexander was the first to report the news:
Campbell, 22, didn’t exactly light it up in Spring Training, which may make this move somewhat surprising. He slashed .167/.305/.576 with one homer in 48 at-bats. Obviously, this isn’t a Spring Training numbers decision as Campbell clearly has supreme talent. He rose the ranks within the farm system fairly quickly and slashed .330/.439/.558 with 20 homers and 24 steals during 2024 while being in the minors.
Two things probably sparked this decision. If Campbell wins AL Rookie of the Year, Boston will be rewarded for having him be part of the Opening Day roster. It’s a fairly newish rule within the CBA. Boston will essentially receive a first round pick if Campbell accomplishes that feat, which is kinda cheese but it incentives teams to promote their top young guys. There are pros and cons to this but Boston clearly feels he’s ready and just might win that award.
It also feels like Boston’s lineup is pretty set. Campbell at second base, Alex Bregman at third base, Marcelo Mayer waiting in the wings to take over for Trevor Story at short. Rafael Devers at… DH.
