Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson is declining and it’s hard to deny it. But that isn’t stopping NBA executives from believing he could earn up to $25 million on a new contract. HoopsHype has the full quote below on what NBA executives had to say about Klay Thompson:
“With that in mind, HoopsHype asked eight NBA executives for their free agent projections for Thompson,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scott wrote Friday. “Three executives believed Thompson would get $18-20 million annually, and the other five predicted he’d get $20-25 million annually. Four executives believed Golden State would ideally try to align Thompson with his fellow ‘Splash Brother,’ Curry, on a two-year deal.
“Green, meanwhile, has a player option for the 2026-27 season. ‘I see him at around $18-20 million a year,’ an NBA executive told HoopsHype. ‘I’m not sure he’ll accept that because he sees himself much higher. If all offers are equal, I think he goes back to Golden State. I feel like his relationship with Steph and being able to play in one place is important to him.’”
At least eight out of 30 NBA executives predicted $20 million for Klay–that’s better than $25 million, but still too rich for my blood; $18 million is better but I am not sure I would offer a cent over $15 million. It’s time to face the facts: Thompson is not going to be a vital part of a championship run anymore. It’s just not going to happen.
Why am I going to give a guy $20 million if he is not going to be one of the main reasons that an organization makes a playoff run? Sentimental reasons? Cause he wants to retire there? Please. I’m not giving him $20 million for the guy he used to be. I need to pay him for the player he is now. Now, yes, the cap rises every year, and $20 million today is not the same as $20 million five years ago. But you could give me $20 million five years ago and today, that still going to be $20 million.
The smart thing the Warriors could do is let him walk if his asking price is too steep. The Spurs did it with Tony Parker, if the Spurs did it with Tony Parker, the Warriors can do it with Klay Thompson.
