Georgia just blasted Florida 43-20 (Link to draft notes from Week 9) this past Saturday in Jacksonville. Former Florida coach Dan Mullen picked the Gators to win on ESPN. Kirby Smart certainly did not forget about it. This may have flown under the radar this week but Smart’s postgame jab at Mullen was hilarious.
“And I don’t see it or hear it, but I know it’s out there. Somebody texted me before the game was like, ‘All these people predicted that we’re not gonna win today.’ I’m just like, ‘Golly, where’s that coming from? You’re supposed to be my friend.’ He didn’t like to recruit though, so.”
It’s a damn good comeback by Smart. Mostly because he’s right. It’s not a secret that Georgia has dominated recruiting since Smart has been there. The Dawgs top the recruiting charts basically every year. It’s not a secret why they had ten players picked in the 2023 NFL Draft. Georgia beat Florida on Saturday because they have way better players. End of story. There just isn’t much more else to it. Have good players, win the games.
Oddly enough, Mullen is the last coach to beat Smart with Florida. Mullen served as the coach at Florida from 2018-2021. Smart did, however, win the other three meetings. Based on what we saw Saturday, I’m not sure what’s going to change. Billy Napier is never going to beat Smart on a consistent basis. He will be lucky if he wins once every four years like what happened with Mullen. Georgia has now won six of the last seven meetings against the Gators. It hasn’t exactly been much of a rivalry, huh?
If Mullen ever does make a return to coaching, we’re really going to have to track his recruiting classes going forward.
