Welcome a day in the life of an NHL head coach. The general manager makes a bad trade that ruins the team’s chemistry. The coach calls out said player. The coach loses his job despite making multiple trips to the playoffs. Yes, you’re hearing that correctly. Todd McLellan has been fired by the Kings.
The Kings have put out a statement on the news.
“We want to thank Todd for his hard work and dedication to the organization,” said Blake. “He has done a tremendous job in moving us forward and making a positive impact on our group and in our community. This was not an easy decision, but we felt the change was necessary at this time. Jim is a well-respected member of our staff who is familiar with our players. We are confident in his ability to lead our team effectively during this pivotal time.”
Jim Hiller will take over as the interim coach. Hiller, 54, has been with the Kings for two years as an assistant. This will be his first head coaching job at the NHL level. It appears that the rest of this season will be a trial run to see if Hiller gets the full time gig.
After being hired by the Kings in 2019, McLellan posted a record of 164-130-44. Most notably, McLellan got his start with the Sharks and posted a 311-163-66 record with San Jose. It’s really the last time the Sharks were dominant.
Personally, I think this is incredibly stupid and short-sided. The Kings played a really structured style of hockey. They’re tough to score against and McLellan has a lot to do with that. This move may not have the impact the Kings think it will. Did they forget the cancer Dubois is still in the building?
