Kiké Hernandez calls out Bob Nightengale over Trevor Story injury

The Boston Red Sox recently learned that Trevor Story would be out for most of the season following elbow surgery. Some unreliable reporters such as Bob Nightengale made an interesting claim about that injury. Kike Hernandez was quick to tweet that the claim was far from the truth.

Nightengale reported an anonymous Red Sox teammate said Story knew he’d need the surgery, but was hoping to ignore and avoid it by resting. Hernandez then responded with some not nice but deserved words.

It’s yet another L for Nightengale, but regardless of the reports the Red Sox still suffer. Story is expected to be out until July, leaving the middle infield wide open. He played second base last season, but with Xander Bogaerts in a Padre uniform, Story was slated to move back to shortstop. It works out for Hernandez, who has a chance to fill a starter role at second base.

It hasn’t been the best start of Story’s six-year, $140 million contract with the Red Sox. He only played in 94 games last season and is now prepared to be sidelined until the All-star break. The 30-year-old also saw a dip in offensive production last year, batting .238 with 16 home runs and a 102 OPS+.

Along with Hernandez, the Red Sox could potentially bring in a free agent, such as Elvis Andrus. Or perhaps if Chaim Bloom was a competent GM, they could’ve brought in Carlos Correa. The Red Sox will definitely regret missing out on those sweepstakes.

The only bright side to the Red Sox offseason has been the extension of Rafael Devers. But we know one player can’t carry a team in baseball, and missing Story for most of the season will significantly hurt their playoff chances. But a tip of the cap to Hernandez for calling out Nightengale, we all know he deserves it.
