As it turns out, Khabib Nurmagomedov isn’t a fan of octagon girls. Unique.
The former UFC Lightweight Champion was discussing the idea of ring girls at fights during a recent event in Moscow. Nurmagomedov recently bought the Russian MMA Promotion Gorilla Fighting Championship, and I believe it is safe to say that he will not be having ringside girls at the events he holds anytime in the future.
Full quote via The New York Post:
“I think they’re the most useless people in martial arts. What function? How? Do they develop the sport? Or do they help people to see that it is the second round now? What are they doing? Tell me, please.”
“I realize that is a history (behind ring card girls). History knows many mistakes. We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in the history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion.
“[UFC president] Dana White maybe likes it. Maybe you do, too. But my name is not Dana. My name is Khabib.”
Below is the video from the press conference as well.
Later in the press conference, he would go on to talk about why he feels “uncomfortable” with the girls walking around the cage.
“For example, I sit with my father [at a fight]. Every person has his own preferences — the culture and values. I come to fight night [and] sit with my father,” Nurmagomedov said. “These [ring card girls] are passing by and showing people that it is the second round. But no one looks at the [round number].
Khabib Nurmagomedov retired officially as of this year, and it is safe to say his legacy will live on forever. While in the UFC or retired, he has never failed to give us plenty of soundbites throughout his career. Here’s to hoping he always stays his honest self, because we love it.
