Kevin Steele Absolutely Snaked Maryland Football

This post was originally titled “Kevin Steele Is the Next Piece of Maryland Football’s Rebuild.” That was because Kevin Steele had verbally agreed to become the next defensive coordinator for Maryland Football. Naturally, I was excited by this news. Steele has worked within some of the biggest programs in college football: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Clemson, among others.

Mike Locksley and @TerpsFootball are finalizing a deal to bring in veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to run the Terps' defense, sources tell ESPN. Steele has worked for some of the biggest names in the sport, and he and Locksley have a longstanding relationship.

He was going to be the next piece of Maryland’s rise to being competitive in the Big Ten. I say “going to be” because it turns out that Steele is actually headed for Miami in an incredibly shady move.

Steele Flips to Miami

According to Jeff Ermann of 247Sports, Steele went back on his verbal commitment to Maryland and will now be the defensive coordinator for Mario Cristobal and Miami. It appears that he used the Maryland job as leverage to get a different offer before officially signing with the Terrapins.

Steele is now headed to Miami instead.

This is why I noted deal wasn't signed while it was being reported as a done deal. I know from Maryland's side, there was some nervousness about Steele leaking he was going to Maryland.

Kevin Steele was already recruiting for Maryland and had set up shop in his College Park office when the move was made. The Maryland staff found out he was leaving from Twitter reports.

The Kevin Steele-> Maryland-> Miami situation is a wild one. He'd been on the ground working in College Park, recruiting for the Terps & about to officially sign a contract.

Needless to say, what an underhanded move from Steele. He used the Terrapins as a pawn to get a different job, then didn’t have the decency to tell any of the staff that he would be leaving. Remember stuff like this anytime a coach criticizes players using the transfer portal.
