Kevin Plawecki is finally hanging up his cleats an eight-year career at the MLB level. Well, maybe he should keep his cleats because he’s not totally done with baseball just yet.
The former 35th overall draft pick by the Mets back in 2012 is retiring but will also join the Padres coaching staff at the MiLB level.
The veteran catcher announced his retirement via social media:
“As I close the chapter on a playing career I’m excited for what the future holds. I still know I have a lot to give this game which has blessed me with so much,” Plawecki said in his announcement. “I look forward to joining the Padres as a coach in minor league player development this upcoming season. Thank you for all the love and support over the years! The best is yet to come! See y’all at a stadium near you!”
Plawecki, 33, spent time with the Mets, Guardians, Red Sox, and Rangers at various points in his career. Across 449 MLB games, the former catcher sported a batting line of .235/.313/.342 that also includes 22 homers and 137 RBIs. Of course, Plawecki wasn’t exactly thought of as an offensive force. His defensive prowess behind the plate kept him in the show for that long. Maybe that skillset will pave the way for a future manager job down the road.
Cheers to a hell of a career and we hope that Plawecki becomes successful during his next phase of life coaching.
