Kevin Brown has been removed from the Baltimore Orioles broadcast team following comments he made before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Typically when we hear of a broadcaster getting suspended or fired, it’s for offensive remarks made on the air. Perhaps the most well-known recent example is that of Thom Brennaman, a Cincinnati Reds announcer who was indefinitely suspended prior to his resignation in 2020 for uttering an anti-gay slur on a hot mic. Did Brown make a similar error? Nope. Not even close.
On July 23, Brown commented that the Orioles have not won a series at Tropicana Field since 2017 and have as many wins there in the 2023 season as they had from 2020-2022 combined. It seems that Baltimore Orioles chairman and CEO John Angelos didn’t like Brown’s use of objective facts and yanked him off the air. He has not appeared on television since July 23 nor radio since July 26. Watch Brown’s pre-game commentary for yourself:
Nothing about this was over the top or deserving of suspension. Brown even commented positively on the 2023 Orioles’ success. Nonetheless, Awful Announcing has confirmed with multiple sources that this exact clip is what got Kevin Brown indefinitely suspended. Fans are understandably upset.
Brown has been working for the Orioles since the 2019 season. The team has yet to comment on when he will return to the booth, if at all.
The Baltimore Orioles lead the AL East with a 70-42 record, three games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays. They are in excellent position to reach the postseason for the first time since 2016.
