Just yesterday, Kemba Walker announced to world that he was retiring from playing basketball. Walker, 34, had not played in the NBA since 2023, and spent a single year playing overseas in the EuroLeague. In his farewell tweet, he expressed optimism, saying he was looking “forward to what’s next.” Well, what’s next is already here. News broke today that Walker will be returning to the Charlotte Hornets, this time as a member of their coaching staff.
Kemba Walker is already a beloved figure to the Hornets. The Bronx native spent his first eight NBA seasons in Charlotte, sticking with them through their name change from the Bobcats. In his final three seasons with Charlotte, Walker averaged over 20 PPG, made the All-Star game every year, and earned Third Team All-NBA honors in 2019. By the time he left Charlotte, Walker was their all-time leading scorer with 12,009 points. He remains in the top 3 in games played, assists, and steals for the organization.
Kemba Walker returns to Charlotte at a time where the Hornets need him more than ever. The team hasn’t made the playoffs since a first round exit in 2016, and finished last season with a 21-61 record. Walker will be taking on the role of player development under head coach Charles Lee, who was hired by Charlotte in May of this year. In his prime, Walker was an excellent shooter and ball handler. Charlotte is a team with some young talent and lots of room to grow. It will be exciting to see where Walker and the other coaches will lead them.
