Kareem Hunt returns to Browns on a one-year deal

The Cleveland Browns saw their season flip upside down during Monday Night Football as star running back Nick Chubb suffered a gruesome season-ending knee injury.

In lieu of the injury, the Browns signed free agent running back and former Brown Kareem Hunt on a one-year deal worth up to $4 million Wednesday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Hunt spent four seasons in Cleveland before becoming a free agent after last season; however, he did not find a home during the offseason. After Chubb’s injury, a return to Cleveland made sense.

In his time as a Brown, he was one of the premier backups in the NFL. Now, he will likely be able to step into an increased role as if he never left–strengthening their backfield alongside running back Jerome Ford.

In Chubb’s absence, Ford was productive during the Browns’ Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cincinnati product finished the day with 16 carries for 106 yards with three receptions for 25 yards. As the season progresses, Hunt and Ford will likely split touches.

In four seasons with the Browns, Hunt tallied 1,874 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Ultimately, this is a solid outcome for Cleveland. Obviously, it did not want to see their star player go down for the season, but it is quite helpful that a quality back with experience on the team was able on the free agent market.

Kareem Hunt’s signing with the Browns was a no-brainer and he will be able to make an immediate impact. This situation could have played out far worse.
