Royals promote top prospect Jac Caglianone

The Kansas City Royals are promoting top prospect Jac Caglianone from Triple-A Omaha, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan first reported Sunday evening.

Caglianone, the Royals’ first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, was slashing .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs in 50 combined games between Double-A and Triple-A this season. In the month of May alone, he crushed 11 home runs with 33 RBIs, posting a 1.087 OPS in 27 games.

Caglianone is the No. 10 prospect in MLB, according to MLB Pipeline, and was the sport’s No. 25 prospect heading into the season, according to Fangraphs.

There was genuinely nothing else that he could’ve done in the minors, and the Royals need his offensive production as much as anyone else. They entered Sunday tied with the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers with the third-worst wRC+ in MLB (81) with the fifth-worst OPS (.661). If you’re tied with the White Sox in any offensive category, you probably aren’t in a good position.

There hasn’t been a good track record of prospects who immediately perform upon their first call-up. Tyler Soderstrom, Jackson Holliday, Wyatt Langford, Jackson Chourio and Matt Shaw all immediately struggled. Caglianone only has 79 games of minor league experience under his belt. That’s not an indictment on his development (or lack thereof), but don’t be surprised if there are growing pains along the way.

After all, it’s baseball we’re talking about. Not even the best are perfect. What are your thoughts on Caglianone’s promotion? Let us know in the comments!
