We put a poll out on twitter asking who would win a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and a team consisting of the rest of the AFC West. The poll resulted in a 50/50 split! So, I decided to put it to the test and simulate a game between these two teams. It took place during week 11 of the 2019 season, since it was a neutral site game in Mexico City so there would be no “Home Field advantage.”

Overview

A quick overview of the All-Stars roster includes: Derek Carr as QB. Josh Jacobs as RB1 and Austin Ekeler as RB 2. Keenan Allen and Courtland Sutton as WR1 and WR2 respectively. Hunter Henry is the starting tight end. The offensive line going from left tackle to right tackle is Trent Brown, Richie Incognito, Rodney Hudson, Trai Turner and Ja’Wuan James. The defense has Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram and Von Miller at Edge. Maurice Hurst, Linval Joseph and Jurrell Casey. The secondary is the entire Chargers secondary, plus Justin Simmons at Free Safety. Linebackers are Nick Kwiatkoski, Cory Littleton and Todd Davis.

1st Quarter

It was a rocky start for a Kansas City offense as their first 2 plays from scrimmage went backwards due to a TFL and a sack off a corner blitz. Both teams started slow with their opening drives resulting in a three and out.

After multiple drives ending in punts, the All-Stars finally found some rhythm through the arm of Derek Carr. The drive started at the All-Star’s 12 yard line, and Carr completed five straight passes to throw a touchdown for the first score! Unfortunately, that was called back due to holding. That didn’t slow Carr down as he completed a six yard pass to Austin Ekeler and a two yard pass to Noah Fant. On third down, Carr let it fly and connected with Williams for a 41 yard strike. On the very next play Carr found Keenan Allen for a two yard touchdown throw. All-Stars take a 7-0 lead.

On the next drive, Mahomes fires looking for Travis Kelce only for it to be intercepted by Desmond King. The interception gives the All-Star team great filed position. However, Chris Jones made his present felt by sacking Derek Carr for a seven yard loss. An incomplete pass from Carr rounded out the first quarter. All-Stars lead 7-0 at the end of the quarter.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter was much closer than the first. It began with McManus drilling a field goal to put the All-Stars up 10-0. After the kickoff, the defense showed up big time and forced a three and out after a Joey Bosa sack. Carr takes over at the his own 30 yard line and starts driving. Carr completes 3/4 passes and Jacobs gains 3 yards on 2 carries setting up the All-Stars for a 53 yard field goal. The snap is good, hold is good but it’s blocked by Kansas City and is returned all the way for a touchdown! Butker drills the extra point to bring the game closer at 17-7.

After great runs by Jacobs for 13 and 5 yards, Carr goes 1/2 for 0 yards and the All-Stars are forced to punt. Kansas City is looking to bring the game even closer. However that is not the case as the All-Stars defense steps up and forces yet another three and out. The All-Stars then began driving behind a strong running game where Jacobs and Austin Ekeler combined for 13 yards on 4 carries. A Chris Jones sack set them back behind the sticks. Even with a 12 yard completion from Carr to Henry, the All-Stars had to punt.

Finally the Kansas City offense started to click. Mahomes went 6/8 on passing for the Chiefs next drive. A sack by Bosa followed by a 3 yard completion led to a 49 yard field goal attempt. Butker made the kick and the game is now tied 10-10 with 58 seconds left in the first half.

The All-Stars had a decision to make. Tied game and they get the ball to begin the second half. Their choice? Air it out. Carr began the drive 2/2 for 50 yards, capping off the drive with a 23 yard strike to Tyrell Williams. McManus made the PAT and the All-Stars lead 17-10 with 42 seconds left in the first half.

The Chiefs’ final drive doesn’t amount to anything as Mahomes completes 4/4 passes yet not enough to get into field goal range. The game enters halftime with the All-Stars leading 17-10.

3rd Quarter

To start the second half the All-Stars receive the kickoff. After 2 carries by Jacobs, Carr connected with Sutton for 14 yards. Then Carr drops back and throws a 50/50 ball to Sutton and it’s intercepted by Charvaius Ward, ending the chance to extent their lead.

Now Mahomes and Kansas City has their chance to tie up the game. Starting at their own 30 yard line, Mahomes showed his MVP form. Mahomes led a 70 yard drive, throwing for 59 yards. This included a 3 yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill. Butker made the PAT and the game is now tied 17-17 with 9:02 left in the third quarter.

Now Carr steps back out onto the field to try and take the lead. The drive begins with a run by Jacobs for no gain. On second down Carr connected with Henry for 24 yards. Jacobs then exploded for 29 yards on the ground. Following up with 2 and 6 yards. A 3 yard loss on third down set up a 43 yard field goal for McManus, making the score 20-17 for the All-Stars.

The Chiefs take over with Mahomes looking to take the lead. The drive begins with two solid runs by Williams for 5 and 8 yards Bosa sacked Mahomes to put the Chiefs behind the sticks. After a 5 yard run by Williams it’s up to Mahomes to keep the drive alive. Casey Hayward had other plans, picking off Mahomes to give the Chiefs quarterback his second interception of the day.

The All-Stars attempt to add to their lead. An incomplete pass from Carr followed by a loss of 1 on a run by Jacobs sets the All-Stars up with a 3rd and 11. Carr finds Ekeler for 9 yards and sets up McManus for a long 53 yard field goal. McManus just doesn’t have the leg and it falls short, Kansas City takes over.

To round out the 3rd quarter Kansas City takes over at their own 43. Mahomes goes 5/6 for 46 yards to end the quarter. The All-Stars lead 20-17.

4th Quarter

Mahomes and Williams takeover the drive, finishing off with an 8 yard touchdown pass to Kelce. The extra point is made the Chiefs lead 24-20. The All-Stars were not going to just roll over and die. Carr went 5/5 for 66 yards, leading the All-Stars down the field. He capped off the drive with an 11 yard touchdown to Henry. McManus made the extra point and the All-Stars reclaimed the lead, 27-24.

Mahomes started off the next drive hot, completing an 18 yard pass to Watkins and a 16 yard pass to Williams. He looked for Kelce on the next play, but Derwin James had other plans. James intercepted the ball and returned it all the way to the Kansas City 14 yard line.

Josh Jacobs takes over from there, rushing for 14 yards to the 1 yard line. He then followed it up by taking it over the goal line for a 1 yard touchdown run. McManus made the extra point and the All-Stars 34-24.

As the Chiefs walk back out on offense looking to get back into the game. However, it just doesn’t happen. Mahomes goes 2/3 for 4 yards and the Chiefs punt. Looking to capitalize on momentum Carr steps back onto the field to put the game to rest. The drive starts with a huge gain in the form of a 38 yard catch by Sutton. Ekeler gains 6 on the ground followed by a 1 yard run by Jacobs to bring up 3rd down. Carr finds Jacobs for an 11 yard gain to move the sticks. Carr completes to Sutton for 9 yards, after a run for no gain by Jacobs it’s 3rd and 1. Carr drops but is sacked by Frank Clark for a loss of 5 to setup a 27 yard field goal. McManus makes it and the All-Stars lead 37-24 with 4:44 left in the game.

Down two scores and in the 4th quarter isn’t anything new to the Chiefs, just look at the Super Bowl. The Chiefs abandon the run. Mahomes completes 7 straight passes before Casey sacks him for a loss of 5. But all hope is lost as Mahomes throws his 4th interception to Justin Simmons, ending the game. The All-Stars run the clock out and win 37-24.

Final Comparisons

Yes, the Chiefs would lose to an All-Star team of AFC West players and this should be no surprise. Combining the best players of 3 teams is better than just 1 roster. The All-Stars out gained the Chiefs 495 total yards to 307. Carr out performed Mahomes, as Carr threw for 393 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception and a passer rating of 125.1. Mahomes threw for 291 yards, 2 touchdowns, 4 interceptions and a passer rating of 70.8.
