Jrue Holiday wants to remain with Celtics

The parity in today’s NBA isn’t changing anytime soon.

For the first time in NBA History, there will not be a repeat champion for not one, not two … but for seven straight seasons.

The Boston Celtics were eliminated Friday in six games by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. There has been a longstanding rumor that the Celtics could be breaking up their core this offseason due to the onerous luxury tax penalties they will face.

One of the players potentially on the move could be guard Jrue Holiday, but he made his intentions clear that he was to remain with Boston.

“We still have a really, really great opportunity and a great window to be successful and win a championship again,” he said recently, according to MassLive‘s Souichi Terada. “I think the talent that we have on this team, not only on the court, but the coaching staff all the way up to [president Brad Stevens] has been amazing. So, the opportunity to win is now, and I still want to be a part of that.”

Holiday, who will be turning 35-years-old in June, is one of the NBA’s best two-way role players. He’s an elite defender and a complementary piece offensively, helping both the Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics to championships in his first year with those respective clubs.

Though Holiday’s contract is not great, especially in today’s two-apron era where every dollar matters. He has $104.4 million owed for the rest of his deal, with a $37.2 million player option in 2027-28. He was invaluable to the team’s title last year, which is why I wasn’t that against it at the time. But there was a considerable dip in play this season and, given his physical style of play, it may not age particularly well.

I’m not sure what the market will look like for him; we will know in the coming weeks. But both he and Kristaps Porzingis–both acquired in the summer of 2023–could be on the chopping block as the Celtics look to save money next season and position themselves for the future.
