Free agent edge rusher Josh Sweat has signed a four-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The contract is worth $76.4 million with $41 million guaranteed. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
Sweat spent all seven years of his NFL career with the Eagles. During his tenure, he was a consistent impact player who logged 43 sacks, 237 tackles, and 54 tackles for loss. Sweat’s time in Philadelphia ended with a Super Bowl victory, during which he logged two and a half sacks.
The Arizona Cardinals are adding a massive piece to their defensive line with the addition of Sweat. The Cardinals were in serious need of pass rushers after linebacker Zaven Collins led the team with five sacks last season. Sweat is a quality addition as they look to address that need.
Sweat, 27, will immediately become the Cardinals’ best defensive lineman and one of the team’s best defenders.
The Cardinals will still have avenues to improve their roster after signing Sweat. At the start of free agency, Arizona had $76.9 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.
The Eagles should be able to produce a quality defensive line despite losing Sweat. Philadelphia has spent draft capital to ensure the team has young players in the trenches. 2023 First-Round Pick Nolan Smith took a big leap in his sophomore and is expected to be a key contributor. Meanwhile, Bryce Huff will also look to bounce back after an injury-riddled first year in Philadelphia and Jalyx Hunt will look to improve on his rookie season.
