Third baseman and former AL MVP Josh Donaldson is set to retire from the sport after 13 seasons in the Majors, Donaldson announced on “The Mayor’s Office with Sean Casey” podcast.
Via the “The Mayor’s Office with Sean Casey” podcast:
“Today is a sad but also happy day for me. … It’s sad because I’ll not be able to go out there and play the game that I love anymore, but it’s also (a) very happy time that I get to be around the family, and kind of take that next chapter in life,” Donaldson said.
Donaldson, who has retired at the age of 38, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2007 MLB Draft with the 48th overall pick, after playing collegiate baseball at Auburn University.
Donaldson spent three years in the minor leagues, before joining the Oakland Athletics in a trade while in the Cubs minor league system.
During his time in Oakland, Donaldson was able to join the Big League in 2010. The third baseman also achieved his first All-Star appearance with the team in 2014.
After the 2014 season, Donaldson was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays where he recorded another two All-Star appearances in 2015 and 2016. Donaldson was also named as the 2015 AL MVP and spent until the 2018 season with the team.
Since his time with the Blue Jays, Donaldson wouldn’t have any tenures more than 2 years with any other team.
Donaldson played with the Cleveland Indians (now known as the Guardians) in 2018 season after being traded from Toronto.
He would spend a year with the Atlanta Braves in 2019 on a one-year deal. Signing a four-year deal in 2020 with the Minnesota Twins, but would be traded to the New York Yankees in 2022.
The four-year deal would expire and Donaldson would sign with the Milwaukee Brewers minor league team before getting elevated to the Brewers main roster.
Donaldson would have last played for the Milwaukee Brewers, with the Brewers also hiring Pat Murphy as their latest manager. Seems like Murphy didn’t want to retain the former AL MVP.
