The Houston Astros pitching staff this season is a ghost of its former self. The team currently has five pitchers on the injured list. Unfortunately for Jose Urquidy he is going to be on this list for quite a while.
Today, Houston Astros GM Dana Brown confirmed Urquidy is scheduled to undergo elbow surgery this week. For 29-year-old pitcher, the 2024 season was basically over before it began. Urquidy suffered a right forearm strain during Spring Training, and has not pitched in any MLB games this year as a result. He attempted a few starts in Triple-A, but was pulled from his most recent outing after complaining of discomfort in the same forearm. Sadly, this is not his first rodeo. Urquidy underwent Tommy John back in 2017. The prognosis for two Tommy John surgeries is not good.
“Right now, they’re both having elbow surgeries,” Brown said. “We’re not sure the extent of it. But Tommy John’s certainly possible.”
The news of Jose Urquidy’s elbow is another setback in a long list for Astros pitching this year. Cristian Javier will also be undergoing elbow surgery this week, though this will be his first. Justin Verlander missed much of the beginning of the season with a shoulder injury. In the case of both Jose Urquidy and Cristian Javier, their return is not expected until next season, at best. The Astros have not confirmed if Urquidy will be receiving Tommy John, but if he does, a 14-18 month recovery period is expected.
